House Demolition on Rural Land Around Sturgeon Lake

Some rural parcels around Sturgeon Lake come with an old farmhouse or a sagging barn on them. When an old building sits where the new home will go, it comes down first. Our demolition services cover the whole building, foundation included.

If trees and brush have grown in around the old buildings, land clearing opens the ground back up. With the buildings gone, the work moves on to site preparation for the new house. That is where the basement gets dug and the house pad gets graded.

Foundation Removal, Concrete Breaking and Hauling

Foundation removal takes out the concrete under the building: the basement walls and the floor slab. We break that concrete up and haul it away.

Concrete breaking and hauling also covers old steps and sidewalks around the house. Driveway removal breaks up an old driveway, and a new gravel driveway can go in its place.

A city's rules can spell out how far foundation removal goes. In Duluth, a wrecking permit calls for every foundation wall and floor slab to come out. The hole is then filled and graded so water drains away.

What Has to Happen Before a Building Comes Down?

Minnesota requires hazardous and problem wastes to come out of a building before it is demolished. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) applies that rule to every structure, farm buildings included. Its list includes appliances, electronics, fuel oil, fluorescent bulbs and asbestos, such as old pipe wrap.

Those items have to be out at least two days before the demolition date. If any asbestos stays in the part that comes down, all of the debris counts as asbestos waste. The MPCA says lead paint can stay on the walls of a building that is coming down.

Before the foundation comes out, a locate ticket goes in through Gopher State One Call (811). Minnesota law calls for at least 48 hours of notice. Those hours start the day after the call and skip weekends and holidays.

We do the work with heavy equipment and clean up the debris at the end. Then the site is ready for the next trade, like the builder or the paving company.

FAQ

Demolition Questions, Answered

Common questions about demolition around Sturgeon Lake and the surrounding counties. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (218) 820-9653

How much does house demolition cost?
The price depends on the building and what sits under it. A full basement means more concrete to break out and more debris to haul. The way in for the machines and the distance to the disposal site matter too. We look at the job first, and the free estimate comes in writing.
Do I need a permit to tear down a building?
Inside city limits, often yes: Duluth, Moose Lake, Sandstone and Hinckley all require one. Thomson Township, around Esko, requires one too. Elsewhere, ask your county or township office about your land. Buildings other than homes of four or fewer units generally need an MPCA notice at least ten working days ahead.
Do the utilities need to be shut off before a demolition?
Yes, every line into the building gets shut off and disconnected first. The power and phone companies oversee the shutoffs on their own lines. In Duluth and Hinckley, the city also oversees how old water and sewer lines are shut off or abandoned. Call those offices early, so the shutoffs are done before the demolition date.
Do you haul away the debris?
Yes. We haul the debris away, broken concrete included, so the trips to the dump are ours. City permits in Duluth and Hinckley send demolition debris to a disposal site the state approves. When the hauling is done, the site is clear.
Can I burn an old house or barn instead?
No. In Minnesota, it is illegal for anyone to burn a structure on purpose, farm buildings included. The one exception is a real firefighter training burn, which needs its own permit from the Minnesota DNR. Burning a building to get rid of it does not count as training.
What happens to the old well and septic system?
Minnesota law requires an unused well to be sealed, unless it holds a Water Well Maintenance Permit. Only a licensed well contractor may seal it. An old septic system that will not be used again must be abandoned under the state's septic rules. If the new house needs a new septic system, a septic designer draws the plan first.
