Land Clearing in Sturgeon Lake, MN

Land Clearing · Sturgeon Lake, MN

Wooded ground cleared and ready to build on

Land clearing turns wooded ground into a lot you can build on. As an excavation contractor serving Sturgeon Lake, Wolf Creek Dirt Works clears building sites and acreage across the area. We take out the trees, brush, stumps and rocks with heavy equipment, and the debris goes with them. We can also mulch the trees we remove.

Many land buyers around here pick up anywhere from 10 to 1,000 acres. Some parcels have a house on them, and some are all woods. We clear the building site first, and then the work moves on to site preparation for the house pad. Call or text (218) 820-9653 for a free estimate.

Lot clearing for a new home or cabin

A new home needs open ground before the digging starts. We clear the spot for the house pad and the working room around it. We also clear the path for a gravel driveway, which gives the trucks a way in.

The septic area gets cleared as well, ahead of septic system installation. You choose which trees stay, and we clear around them. On a big wooded parcel, the rest of the woods can stay as they are.

An old cabin or barn may stand where the new home goes. Demolition takes it down first, and then the clearing goes on.

Brush and stump removal, plus mulching

In the trade, the work splits into clearing and grubbing. Clearing takes the trees and brush down. Grubbing pulls the stumps and roots out of the ground. Stumps and roots left under a house pad or a driveway can rot and settle later.

When we mulch the trees we remove, the wood is ground into chips. Debris removal hauls off the slash and anything else that has to leave the site. Dirt removal takes care of a site that has more dirt than it needs.

What does clearing a wooded lot around Sturgeon Lake involve?

The state DNR describes the soils across much of east-central Minnesota as stony, over dense glacial till. Rocks come up with the stumps, and we haul them off with the debris. The dense till also slows water as it soaks in, and the low spots hold wetlands and peat.

Some of that wet ground may be a protected wetland. Minnesota law says wetlands must not be drained or filled unless the loss is replaced under an approved plan. The county or the soil and water conservation district answers whether a wet spot counts.

How a Job With Wolf Creek Runs

From the first call or text to the finished work, here is how it goes.

1

Call or Text

Call or text (218) 820-9653 and tell us about the job. Let us know where the land is and what you plan to build.

2

We Look at the Land

We come out and look over the land and the work you want done. Wet ground and thick woods both change the plan, so we see them first.

3

Your Written Estimate

We put a free estimate in writing for the work. You read it over and decide when you are ready.

4

Locates and Plans

Before any digging, a locate ticket goes in through Gopher State One Call (811). Septic work waits for the designer's plan and the permit.

5

The Dirt Work Gets Done

We do the work with heavy equipment and clean up the debris at the end. Then the site is ready for the next trade, like the builder or the paving company.

FAQ

Land Clearing Questions, Answered

Common questions about land clearing around Sturgeon Lake and the surrounding counties. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (218) 820-9653

How much does land clearing cost?
The price depends on how much ground gets cleared and how thick the trees and brush are. Stumps, rock, wet ground and the way in all change the work. Whether the wood gets mulched or hauled matters too. We look at all of it for the free estimate, and the quote comes in writing.
Do you take out the stumps too?
Yes, stumps come out as part of land clearing, so the ground is ready to build on. Pulling stumps with a machine disturbs the soil, which counts as excavation under Minnesota's one-call law. Before that digging, the law calls for at least 48 hours' notice to Gopher State One Call (811). The 48 hours start after the day of the call and skip weekends and holidays.
Can I burn the brush piles myself?
Burning brush in Minnesota takes a DNR permit unless 3 inches of unbroken snow cover the ground around the fire. Some local governments require a permit all year. Piles bigger than 20 by 20 by 20 feet fall under a separate DNR variance permit. We can mulch the trees we remove, or haul the debris away instead.
What time of year works for land clearing?
On wet ground, dry or frozen conditions work well, since soft soil ruts under heavy machines. The DNR's rutting guidelines for state forest land move machines to drier or frozen ground. Each spring, the DNR also stops issuing burning permits in fire-prone areas until green-up. We talk through the timing with you once we have seen the ground.
Can you clear a lot on a lake or river?
Yes, within Minnesota's shoreland rules, which cover land within 1,000 feet of a lake or 300 feet of a river. Those rules do not allow intensive clearing in the shore impact zone, the strip nearest the water. Limited clearing for a view or a path can be allowed. The county or city zoning office has the details for your lot.
What should I do before the clearing starts?
Know where your property lines are. If the corners are hard to find, a land surveyor can stake them. Then flag the trees you want to keep, and we go over the plan with you on site.
