Driveway and road building gives a new home or a cabin its way in from the road. Wolf Creek Dirt Works builds new gravel driveways and private roads and hauls in the gravel for them. For a paved driveway, we build the base, and a paving company lays the asphalt.
Land around Sturgeon Lake often sells in big pieces, anywhere from 10 to 1,000 acres. On a parcel like that, the house can sit far back, and the driveway goes in early. Driveway and road building is one part of our work as an excavation contractor around Sturgeon Lake. Call or text (218) 820-9653, and we look at the route and put a free estimate in writing.

A gravel driveway is built in layers, from the ground up. The black dirt comes off the route, and clean fill and gravel build up the base. Kanabec County's driveway standards, for one, call for fill with no organic material under an entrance. Class 5, Minnesota's road-base gravel, goes on top and gets packed down.
The federal gravel road manual starts with the shape of the road. The surface needs enough crown to shed water to the sides, and a ditch carries it away. Culverts at the right spot and height carry water under the road. We set them where the driveway crosses a ditch or a low spot.
A private road follows the same steps over a longer route. On a wooded route, land clearing for the road comes first. For a new home, the driveway rough-in is part of building site preparation.
For a paved driveway, we build the base under the asphalt. We grade it close to the finished height, a finish we call a brush finish or broom finish. Then the paving company does the last inch or two and lays the asphalt. If an old driveway has to come out first, driveway removal clears the way.
The base matters more where the ground freezes. Federal soil scientists note that frost heave and soft ground at the thaw damage pavements. Wet silty or clay soils suffer most, and well-drained sand or gravel suffers least. A gravel base on firm ground gives the asphalt its footing.
Water and frost are hard on a gravel driveway. The ground here freezes from about November to April. Kanabec and St. Louis counties post spring load limits on their roads as it thaws. As the frost melts, St. Louis County says, the roadbed fills with water and can't carry normal truck weights.
The ground under the route matters too. Federal soil surveys for Pine and Carlton counties rate the peat in low ground as very limited for local roads. Some of the wet till soils get the same rating. A high water table and frost action are among the reasons given.
Driveway repair starts with the water. The same federal manual says many problems go away once the shape is right and the gravel is good. So we reshape the driveway to shed water and fix the ditches and culverts along it. Where the base has gone soft, we dig out the bad stretch and rebuild it.
